We found Vitamin D in the process, but the hardware we had available was running Linux. Tyler had found Vitamin D when we were looking for options, and while we are both Mac users and it could have been an option for our home use, part of the point was to use Linux. Plus, we got a certain amount of experience with some of the inner workings of the networking scripts!

I stumbled upon this post and thought you might be interested in free software that does something similar to "motion" but is much more sophisticated. Take a look at http://www.vitamindinc.com ... there's a free version which will almost certainly work with your camera.

Vitamind D offers email alerts when certain events happen and you can set rules and filters for events. Also, the software tries to be smart about what is recognized as an object, thus drastically culling the video review time.

That's great! I made that last comment and then I remembered your camera was stolen. But now you have it back! (They didn't find your backpack?)

Last year someone was spray painting cars and the side of the house I was living in and I tried something like this... It didn't work because they stopped and then the pizza delivery guy saw the camera and was like, "Nice camera...?" So I took it down.

The guy you caught is probably glad to still have both of his hands.
